Precision mesh halts bugs in their tracks
Incorporating a precision mesh in a smoke detector prevents bugs generating false alarms.
Customer Requirement:
To stop minute bugs (found on chickens) setting off smoke detectors in chicken shacks. Normal expanded meshes were too coarse to prevent the insects penetrating and there was a problem seating the component in the plastic moulding which has 18 small plastic locating pillars.
Material:
Stainless steel
Solution:
- PRECISION MICRO etched the filter mesh from 0.125mm stainless steel with thousands of square holes separated by 0.125mm wide bars (to achieve optimum airflow).
- The 18 holes, which fitted over the pillars were serated to allow the filter to 'bite' into the plastic and hold it securely in place.
Advantage
- The part passed stringent tests and dramatically reduced the number of false alarms
- The part could be assembled quickly and more efficiently thanks to the serated locking mechanism
